How to scrap a car in Greater Manchester

Greater Manchester’s ten boroughs stretch from the Pennine edge to the Cheshire plain. Whether your car is on a Bolton terrace or a Stockport cul-de-sac, the process for scrapping it is the same.

A row of red-brick terraced houses along a quiet road in Manchester under a blue sky

Each of the ten metropolitan boroughs runs its own parking and abandoned vehicle services, and together they form the Greater Manchester Combined Authority. Stockport and Bolton, where several of our local guides sit, are among the larger boroughs, each with a mix of busy town centres and quieter suburbs and villages.

The M60 orbital motorway circles the core of the conurbation, with radial routes such as the M61 to Bolton, the M62 east and west, and the M56 towards the airport and Cheshire. Most homes are within a few miles of one of them.

Clean air: no charge for cars

Greater Manchester’s clean air plans have never included daily charges for private cars, and the city region has not introduced a charging zone. Older cars here are scrapped for the usual reasons, cost and condition, rather than to avoid a zone.

Suburbs, hills and canals

Southern boroughs such as Stockport have leafy suburbs with drives and garages, while towns on the Pennine side, like those around Marple and Romiley, climb steep streets towards the hills. Steep or narrow streets are no obstacle to collection, but they are worth mentioning in advance.

Questions

Scrapping a car in Greater Manchester

Short, straight answers. The guides go into more depth.

Is there a Clean Air Zone charge for cars in Manchester?

No. Greater Manchester has not introduced a charging zone for private cars.

Which council covers Cheadle and Bramhall?

Stockport Metropolitan Borough Council.

Who tells the DVLA that the car has been scrapped?

You should. Use the DVLA's online service with the 11-digit reference from your logbook, or send the yellow section by post. Without that step the car stays linked to you, and the DVLA can fine you up to £1,000.

Does collection cost anything?

Nothing. The recovery truck comes free of charge, and turning the offer down costs nothing either.
