Berkshire · local guide
Hungerford is a small market town on the Kennet and Avon Canal, at the western tip of Berkshire. Most people here drive everywhere, so when a car reaches the end of its life, it helps to know the routine.

The A4 Bath Road runs through the town, and the A338 heads north to junction 14 of the M4 and on to Wantage. The town grew up where the old road crossed the River Kennet, and the canal and railway follow the same valley.
Hungerford is surrounded by downland villages and farms, many reached only by lanes. Cars here tend to cover long distances, and a high-mileage car that fails its MOT is a common reason for scrapping.
Some homes near the canal or Hungerford Common are reached by narrow roads or shared drives. Tell the driver about bridges, gates or grazing animals on the common so they can plan the approach.
