The A609 runs through the town between Nottingham and Belper, and the A6007 links it north to Heanor and south to Long Eaton. Junctions 25 and 26 of the M1 are a few miles to the south-east and east. Ilkeston station, on the line through the Erewash valley, reopened in 2017.
The town has many terraced streets close to the centre and newer estates on the edges. The Erewash Canal runs along the valley below.
Ilkeston’s centre sits on a hill, and some streets are steep. If your car is parked on a slope, tell the driver which way it faces and whether the handbrake holds.
