Alton is a brewing and market town at the head of the Wey valley, at one end of the Watercress Line heritage railway. Around it lie villages where a car is the only practical way to get about.

The A31 bypasses the town on its way between Farnham and Winchester, and the A339 heads north towards Basingstoke. Alton station is the terminus of the mainline service from London and the start of the Mid Hants Railway, the Watercress Line, which runs to Alresford.
Chawton, just south of the town, is where Jane Austen lived and wrote. Like the other villages nearby, it has narrow lanes and limited parking.
Four Marks and Medstead sit high on the chalk to the south-west of Alton, where lanes can be icy in winter. If a collection is booked in bad weather, the driver may suggest moving the time to keep everyone safe.
